We’re thrilled to announce that Campbell River Whale Watching & Adventure Tours has become the first whale-watching company in Canada to earn the prestigious Rainbow Registered accreditation. Awarded by the Canadian 2SLGBTQIA+ Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC), this honor reflects our dedication to creating an inclusive environment where all guests, staff, and community members feel welcome and respected.

Setting a New Standard for Inclusive Tourism

At Campbell River Whale Watching, inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do. As our co-owner, Stephen Gabrysh, explains, “This accreditation is more than just recognition; it’s a commitment to building spaces where everyone - regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity - feels valued. We hope our efforts inspire other businesses in the tourism industry to embrace similar practices.”

The Rainbow Registered program empowers travelers to find companies that actively prioritize inclusivity. By appearing in the Rainbow Registered directory, we make it easy for 2SLGBTQIA+ travelers and allies to explore British Columbia with confidence, knowing they’ll enjoy respectful and welcoming experiences at businesses that align with their values.

Leading by Example: Our Journey to Rainbow Registration

Earning our Rainbow Registered status required a deep review of our practices and policies to ensure inclusivity at every level. Some key initiatives that made this possible include:

  • Visible Inclusion: Progress Pride flags are proudly displayed year-round at our office and on every vessel.
  • Gender-Neutral Bathrooms: We advocated for and helped bring gender-neutral restrooms to our marina.
  • Inclusive Booking Process: Guests can share their preferred pronouns during booking, so we can communicate respectfully.
  • Diversity Training: All of our staff, including seasonal team members, participate in regular diversity workshops, with specific training focused on creating safe and welcoming guest experiences.
  • Support for the Local 2SLGBTQIA+ Community: We’re actively involved in North Island Pride events, and each year we host an Annual Pride Harbour Cruise. Started in 2023, this cruise has already become a significant community event, raising $1,475 in 2024 alone, with proceeds going to North Island Pride.

“We want Campbell River to be known as a destination where everyone feels like they belong,” says Stephen Gabrysh. “Being Rainbow Registered is more than just tourism; it’s about building a stronger, more inclusive community.”
