We took part in a grizzly tour and it was a special experience to be able to observe these impressive animals in the wild. We were accompanied by First Nation guides and were given a lot of interesting information. The almost 3 hour boat ride there was also an experience. We were able to observe sea lions, orcas and a humpback whale several times. A really worthwhile trip.

World-Class Grizzly Bear Viewing from Campbell River

Bute and Toba Inlet offer some of the best grizzly bear viewing in the world. We recommend visiting both if possible, as each destination is stunning and unique in its own way.

Here is a detailed overview of both locations:

Bute Inlet

  • Scenery: Enjoy the stunning beauty of Bute Inlet with turquoise waters and breathtaking views. The Orford River, where we view the bears, is 98 km from Campbell River. Highlights include the unique Tidal Rapids near Bute Inlet.
  • Bear Viewing: Spend 3 hours on land observing grizzly bears from covered, raised platforms along the Orford River. Historically, Bute Inlet has more sightings of females with cubs.
  • Cultural Experience: Guided by the Homalco First Nation, learn about their cultural heritage during your visit.

Toba Inlet

  • Scenery: Experience the dramatic landscapes of Toba Inlet with towering glacier mountains and massive waterfalls. The Klite River, where bear viewing takes place, is 107 km from Campbell River.
  • Bear Viewing: Spend 3 hours on land observing grizzly bears from various viewing platforms along the Klite River. Sightings may include large males or occasionally females with cubs.
  • Cultural Experience: Gain insights into the culture of the Klahoose First Nation during your land-based tour.

Shared Features

  • Land-Based Viewing: Both tours feature 3 hours of bear viewing from various platforms and van transport to prime locations along the rivers.
  • Meals and Comfort: Enjoy a homemade lunch, snacks, tea, coffee, and hot chocolate on both tours. Onboard bathrooms are available for your convenience.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Both tours offer opportunities to spot marine wildlife and birds along the way with expert interpretation by our certified Naturalist and Captain. Sightings can include eagles, humpback whales, dolphins, orcas, and sea lions.
